What Form W-4 does
Your employer uses Form W-4 to work out how much federal income tax to withhold from each paycheck. You fill in your filing status, and optionally adjust for multiple jobs, dependents, other income, or deductions. Most new hires only need Steps 1 and 5; the other steps are for people who want to fine-tune their withholding.
